Ingram Planetarium Has A Hurricane! . . . Simulator!

As I have mentioned before, the Town of Sunset Beach boasts its own excellent Planetarium, with a state-of-the-art 85-seat theater facility and an excellent "hands-on" Science Hall.

And when we dropped by for our latest casual visit to Ingram Planetarium this past month, we discovered they have added one more cool thing to the Science Hall:  a Hurricane Simulator!  It's just two dollars for you and a friend to step into the simulator and experience for a few minutes the wind force of a Category 1 Hurricane - 78 mile-per-hour winds (minus the rain, storm surge, or debris flying through the air, we were happy to note)!

Improvements in Sunset Beach, NC, Amenities

With a gorgeous place like Sunset Beach to discuss, it does seem silly to be reporting on bathroom facilities.  But, let's be practical here:  Even in Paradise, when you gotta' go, you gotta' go!  And it's nice to know that there's a nice, cool, clean, commodious place near the beach to . . . well, you know.  That, together with the outdoor showers, helps a lot!

So, during our most recent escape to Sunset Beach Bliss, when we headed for the sand and surf, I took a moment to take some snaps of the  brand new facilities that have been added by the Town.  And I must say, the two restroom facilities exceeded my expectations: baby changing surfaces, a family bathroom - and each room even has heat & air conditioning!

So here's one more reason for families to choose Sunset Beach for their Summer escape!  A beautiful, natural and clean beach, with all the modern amenities that make enjoying yourself outside that much easier - particularly when there are children involved.  Brilliant for Moms and Dads!

Public Parking at Sunset Beach, NC

Sunset Beach Bliss is just a short drive from Sunset Beach.  And parking at Sunset Beach, NC, is still pretty easy to find.  Even in the middle of July, parking in the further-away spaces just means a few minutes' easy walk down Sunset Boulevard.  As you can see in the satellite photo below, there are about roughly 60 spaces in the main public lot right by by the Gazebo and Boardwalk onto the beach.  During the height of the Summer Season if you are a "Johnny-come-lately" to the beach, you may need to park further back along Sunset Boulevard, North of the intersection wtih Main Street.

Also, this year, the Town of Sunset Beach has replaced the "portable restrooms" with a real bathroom (Yay!).  There are nice outdoor showers located right by the Gazebo at the head of the boardwalk.  So after a delightful day of sand and surf, you can rinse off and enjoy cool breezes in the shade, as you wait for the stragglers in your group (who, of course, have the car keys) to return from the shore and head back for showers, air conditioning and a seafood meal . . . Calabash Style!

Bird Island Near Sunset Beach: On Yahoo's List of World's Unusual Beaches

Yahoo has put out its list of the world's most unusual beaches, and our own Bird Island (not really an island anymore, so you can walk across to it any time of day or night without having to worry about the tides - all the way to the S.C. border) is on it!

We love to take long walks along Bird Island, and visit the now famous "Kindred Spirit" mailbox.

A New Boat Ramp for Sunset Beach!

The North Carolina Water Resources Commission (WRC) has begun work on a long-anticipated boat ramp. Situated where the old Pontoon Bridge once was, the ramp will provide water access for boaters and fishing enthusiasts. The Ramp is expected to be ready for the 2012 summer season!

For future updates on the progress of this project, visit the Town of Sunset Beach website.
